What is a Memory Foam Mattress Topper?

from: ConsumerEvidence.com

There's a reasonably new mattress out which offers a more comfortable and better sleeping experience. It is called memory foam and it conforms to the crevices and contours of your body when you lay on it and gives you a more individualized mold for added comfort. You should experience more of a personalized comfort level when you go to sleep on memory foam.

There is also another option to buying a full size memory foam mattress and that is what is called the memory foam mattress topper. A memory foam mattress topper has the noticeable difference of being thinner than a full size mattress and it is commonly used on top of an existing mattresses. This way you can get the comfortable experience of a memory foam mattress without buying a full size one. But even if it is an affordable option affordable alternative will it be as effective as a complete mattress?

First off, in order for a memory foam mattress to function most effectively it needs to sit on a solid surface. If you put a mattress topper on soft surfaces, you would not get the most favorable use that memory foam can provide. This means that if you put a mattress topper on a soft foam surface could defeat the entire purpose of why you got it.

If you want to use a memory foam mattress topper you can still get the intended comfort you seek. There is an assortment of thick nesses available for Memory foam mattress toppers. The most popular of these toppers would be the 2" topper. You can find thinner versions for a lower cost and you can find more expensive ones measuring three and four inches thick.

You also need to decide on the density of the foam for your mattress topper. You can find lower density toppers, which are the two and a half to three and a half pound variety. You can also find higher density ones that are five to almost six pounds in density. The density of your toppers will determine how long they will be able to provide the support you need. A denser mattress topper will provide better support for you and work effectively for a longer time.

Just remember to place your memory foam topper on a firm surface and not a soft surface. A solid foundation will let the topper work some magic and provide it's full level of comfort. If your existing mattress is too soft, you could even use your mattress topper to sleep on the floor or place a firm piece of plywood between the topper and your current mattress.

Unlike some full size memory foam mattresses, you won't need a pad over your topper. Realize that the memory foam is temperature sensitive and the added comfort of the foam conforming to your body's shape is made possible by your body's temperature. If you place anything between you and the topper it will decrease this effect.
